How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram

October 29, 2026 · 5 min read

Your follower count dropped from 1,204 to 1,198, and Instagram won’t tell you why. There is no notification when someone unfollows you, and no list of people who left. Scrolling through your followers to spot who is missing is impossible beyond a few dozen accounts.

There is still a reliable way to know, without giving your password to anyone: compare two snapshots of your followers taken on different dates.

Why the Instagram app can’t show you

Instagram only shows your current followers. It doesn’t keep a visible history, so a person who left simply disappears from the list. To know who is gone, you need an earlier list to compare with.

That earlier list exists: it’s your official data export. Instagram must give it to you on request, and it contains every follower, with the date they started following you.

The method: two snapshots, one comparison

  1. Today: request your Instagram export with at least Followers and following (see our guide to download your Instagram data).
  2. Analyze it once in FollowersChecker. The usernames of your followers are saved in your browser, on your device only.
  3. A few weeks later: request a new export and drop it in again.
  4. The Summary tab shows how many people unfollowed you, and the Followers tab lists them in a “From … to …” block, with the people who started following you in the meantime.

Already have an older export on your computer? You don’t need to wait. Under the drop area on the home page, tap Compare two exports, add the older ZIP and the more recent one, and you get the exact list of people who left between the two dates.

Read the results carefully

An account missing from the new list hasn’t always unfollowed you. The same gap appears when someone:

Before drawing conclusions, tap Profile next to the name: if the account still exists and you can’t find yourself among its following, they really unfollowed you.

Don’t confuse it with “recently unfollowed”

Your export may contain a file called recently unfollowed. It lists the accounts you unfollowed, not the people who unfollowed you. FollowersChecker shows it separately, in the “You unfollowed” list, so you never mix up the two.

Take your first snapshot now: drop your export and next time you’ll see exactly who left.

Frequently asked questions

Does the person know I checked?

No. The analysis only reads your own data export, on your device. Nobody is notified and nothing is sent to Instagram.

Can I see who unfollowed me before my first export?

Not exactly. An export only contains your current followers. You can see who left starting from your first snapshot, so the sooner you take it, the better.

How often should I check?

Every few weeks is enough. Requesting an export takes a minute, and Instagram usually sends it within a few minutes to 48 hours.

Why not use an “unfollowers” app?

Most ask for your password or use bots, which can get your account hacked or restricted. Read are unfollower apps safe? for details.

Try it now: drop your export and see instantly who doesn’t follow you back. Free, no password.
