How to download your Instagram and TikTok data

Instagram and TikTok keep an impressive amount of information about you: followers, messages, searches, logins and the interests used for advertising. Privacy laws give you the right to get a copy. Here’s how, screen by screen.

Instagram (and Threads)

  1. Open the app, tap your profile picture, then the ☰ menu at the top right.
  2. Open Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
  3. Tap Export your information (“Download your information” on some versions), then Create export.
  4. Choose your Instagram account and Export to device.
  5. Under Customize information, select what you need (see the list below).
  6. Choose the date range All time and the JSON format. For a lighter file, set media quality to Low.
  7. Start the export. Instagram emails you when the file is ready, from a few minutes to 48 hours later.

With lots of photos and videos, Instagram may split the export into several ZIP files. Keep them all: you can drop them together into FollowersChecker.

TikTok

  1. Open your profile, then the ☰ menu and Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Account, then Download your data.
  3. In the Request data tab, choose All or a custom selection.
  4. Choose the JSON format, then Request data.
  5. When the file is ready, it appears in the Download data tab. It only stays there for a few days.

Which categories should you select?

If in doubt, request everything: FollowersChecker only reads the useful files, even in a ZIP of several gigabytes.

HTML is made to be read page by page in a browser; JSON is made to be analyzed by a program. Choose JSON when you can.
