How to find old Instagram messages without scrolling for hours
An address, a photo, a promise made three years ago… Finding an old message on Instagram often means scrolling up a conversation for minutes, and the app’s search is limited. There is a much faster way: your data export contains your messages, and you can search all of them at once.
Step 1: download your messages
- In Instagram: ☰ → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information.
- Create an export to your device and, under Customize information, select Messages.
- Choose the JSON format and the date range All time. To make the file lighter, set media quality to Low.
- Download the ZIP when Instagram emails you. With many photos, it may come in several parts: keep them all.
Each screen is detailed in our guide to download your Instagram data.
Step 2: search every conversation
Drop the ZIP into FollowersChecker and open the Messages tab:
- Type a word to find it in all your conversations at once, with the results highlighted.
- Filter conversations by name, and open one to read it from the start.
- See the stats of each conversation: number of messages, share sent by you, since when you talk.
- Export a conversation as a .txt file to keep it.
Photos, videos, voice messages and shared posts are marked in the conversation, so you know where they were sent.
What you won’t find
- Unsent messages: when someone unsends a message, it is generally not in the export.
- Disappearing messages (vanish mode) are not kept.
- End-to-end encrypted chats may not be included in the export, depending on your settings and Instagram’s rollout.
- Conversations you deleted on your side may be missing.
Find that message in seconds: drop your export and search everything at once.

Your conversations are read in your browser tab and are never uploaded or saved: close the tab and they’re gone from the site. Keep the ZIP somewhere safe, as it’s a complete backup of your chats. Frequently asked questions
Can I recover deleted Instagram messages?
Usually not. Messages that were unsent or deleted are generally not in the export. The export is still the best way to find everything that remains.
Are message requests included?
Yes. Messages from people you don’t follow, in the requests folder, are read too.
Does the other person know I downloaded our conversation?
No. Requesting your export and reading it doesn’t notify anyone.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The site works in your phone’s browser: download the ZIP, then choose it from your files.
